Thank You For Being My Arm-Holder

A Friend Lifts Up

There’s one thing that really helped get me through my season of sorrow — other than the hope I had in God and trusting that He would heal my broken heart and bring me a season of joy. Other than that, the one thing getting me through was the arm-holders in my life. I’m sure you are thinking, “What the heck is an arm-holder?” Well, let me tell you a little story.

Back a long, long time ago, three men named Moses, Aaron and Hur climbed a big hill that was near a battlefield. On the battlefield was their other friend, Joshua, who was leading soldiers known as the Israelites into battle to fight the army of Amalek. Whenever Moses held up his staff as he stood on top of the hill over the battlefield, the Israelites had the advantage in the battle. But whenever he dropped his arms, the big bad Amalekites began to win. Eventually, Moses became so tired, he couldn’t hold his arms up any more. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for Moses to sit on. Then, they each stood on one side of Moses and held up his arms. They held his arms steady until sunset, when Joshua and the Israelites won the battle. (Exodus 17:8-13)

Sometimes, to win our battles we need someone there to hold our arms up. We need arm-holders. Sometimes, we just can’t do it on our own. We get tired and weary. We need to sit down, we need rest, we need encouragement.

That’s why God gave us arm-holders in life — people who want to be there for us to hold up our arms when we’re fighting a hard battle. People who will encourage us and lift us up. People who will listen. People who will hold us while we cry. People who will send us cards in the mail. People who will sit with us, so we’re not alone. People who hold our arms up when we can’t hold them up on our own anymore.

If someone sent this to you, know that they see you as one of their arm-holders. And they want to thank you.

Thank You For Being my Arm-Holder

A Thank You Letter to Our Arm-Holders

To our Arm-Holders,

Thank you for being there for me. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for encouraging me. Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for letting me cry, for listening when I needed to work out all the emotions churning inside me. Thank you for sending me care packages and cards in the mail. Thank for you spending time with me, letting me hang out with you so I wouldn’t have to be alone.

Thank you for letting me call you late at night. Thank you for the notes of thoughtfulness you leave me. Thank you for calling to check on me. Thank you for fixing me meals. Thank you for praying for me. You have shown me love and compassion.

Thank you for holding up my arms when I was too tired and weary. You held me up when I was losing the battle. You mean so much to me. You are my arm-holder, and for that I am incredibly grateful.

I hope that I can be an arm-holder for you too. I hope that I can be like you, striving to help others win their battles by holding up their arms when they are tired.

Feeling Stronger Thanks to You,

Your Friend

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Very well-written, Tiffany. I’m afraid to think of where I might be in life if I did not have wonderful “arm holders.”

What an amazing story. I have experienced many ups and downs in life. It is good to be reminded of both the good and the bad. I learned and experienced so many things. I would not trade even the bad ones because they brought me to where I am today. You are so right…the arm holders make all the difference in the world. Thanks!

Thanks for commenting Traci. I agree, even though it’s difficult to be thankful for the bad times, they really do make us who we are and help us grow in our relationship with God.
