In high school, I was in three different plays. It was so much fun! I’ve also attended quite a few plays in my life. I really enjoy a funny play or a musical with lots of dancing.
Have you ever been to a play? Or maybe you’ve been part of the cast of a play like I was?
Almost all plays have Act I, Act II, Act III, and so on depending on how long the play is. And with more than one act, every play has an intermission.
Intermission: (n) A recess between parts of a performance or production, such as for a theatrical play, opera, concert or film screening.
For those attending a play, an intermission is just a break to get more popcorn, go to the bathroom or just stand up and stretch. But to those behind the scenes, an intermission is so much more.
During that “break,” people are quickly working to set up new set designs to change the scenery. People are preparing props for the next act. Actors are running over their upcoming lines. Someone is getting the lights ready, another the sound. Lots and lots of people are using the intermission to prepare for the next act.
Are You in an Intermission?
A lot of times in life, when things aren’t going our way — when the clouds start to cover our sky — we wonder where God is. We ask Him if He’s still there, if He’s listening, if He remembers we exist. Sometimes, it feels like an intermission. Like He’s taking a break from our lives.
It’s those times when we just don’t feel Him near, don’t hear Him anymore and begin to doubt that we need to remember what an intermission really is.
We need to realize that in those times, God is still very much present. We just can’t see Him because He’s behind the curtain — preparing things for the next act in our lives. He’s changing the sets, handing out props, running over lines, fixing the lighting and getting the sound ready. God NEVER leaves us.
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you … It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. -Deuteronomy 31:6, 8
So when the clouds start to form and you begin to wonder where God went, just remember what an intermission is. Go get some popcorn and trust that God is preparing the next amazing act for you life.
