Travis and I moved to a new location about three months ago. We love exploring our new home and the surrounding areas. We are within driving distance of so many neat places — Savannah, Tybee Island, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Jacksonville, Charlotte, Hilton Head … There never has to be a boring weekend! We have really enjoyed visiting some of these new places, and we have a list of other places we want to visit in the future.
With a new hometown, there are tons of new restaurants. We both like trying new restaurants, but it’s hard to remember all the places we once saw and wanted to try. So I created a food passport to help us visit all the new eateries and try new foods. This is just one step closer to becoming real foodies.
What is a Food Passport?
A food passport is a cute little book that names all the restaurants you want to try in your new area. (or the area you’ve always been in)
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Paper
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Pen/Marker
I started by making a list of all the restaurants we had talked about trying. As we went over them, we looked up a few more online. I made sure to write down the address for each restaurant too. I wanted to include it in my passport so when we opened it up and chose a place, we could just put the address in our GPS instead of having to look it up. It would also help in choosing a restaurant close to where we were at the time. But if you don’t want to take the time to google each restaurant, you could probably just search for the restaurant using your GPS.
Once I had all the restaurants listed, I cut five pieces of printer paper in half. Put them all together and fold them in half — making a little book.
Staple the pages where a binder on a book would be. Now your book is all put together. If you want to be extra crafty you can cut scrapbook paper out to use as a cover for your book. I didn’t feel the need, but it would look cute.
Use a pen or even colorful markers to write the names of each restaurant — one per page — including the address. You can also include a money key to show how expensive each restaurant is. Just look up the menu online and write a $, $$ or $$$ on each page. A great way to easily look up all this info is to use Yelp.com. Just search the restaurant and city, it will give you the address and even the price range.
Make sure you include an open box somewhere on each page so you can check it off once you’ve ate there. We plan to keep our food passport in our car so when we get hungry while out on the town, we can just open it up and pick one! Or you can use it for date night ideas!
Now, we have a great little book to make choosing a restaurant fun again. No more “I don’t care, what do you want?” going on!
