Last week I was on a mail kick. I love getting mail — let me clarify, I love getting mail that is for me and is nice. Bills and junk mail do not count as nice. But whenever I receive a card, a letter, or even better a package — I get SO excited. And almost as much as I love receiving mail, I love sending out mail. I could stand in the greeting card aisle for hours! It gives me joy to send some upliftment out to others. My computer is telling me “upliftment” isn’t a word. So I declare it a word right now, and it basically means encouragement.
So last week, I sent out several cards and letters — mostly just because. I want to share with you some upliftment I sent out.
I have a friend going through a hard time right now. I bet we all can think of someone we know in that situation. My friend is struggling with doubt and believing the Enemy’s lies. So I drew her a rainbow.
I took a piece of paper and colored it until it was full of rainbow colors. ROY G. BIV anyone? Then I wrote in a card explaining the rainbow drawing.
I’m sending you a rainbow to hang up somewhere in your room. A rainbow is a symbol of God’s promise.
Where did the rainbow come from?
In Genesis 9:13, God said, “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of my promise with you and every living creature.” God had just flooded the entire Earth, but had saved Noah, his family, and two of every creature. (Except maybe the dinosaurs, I haven’t figured that whole thing out yet!)
This is the story of Noah and the ark that many of us learn as children. And some of us perhaps not until adulthood. When the flooding was over and Noah and the others were safe on land, God sent a rainbow in the sky.
The very first rainbow — what a sight! Maybe even a little confusing or scary since they didn’t know what it was. But God said that it was a promise to them, and to us. It is a symbol of His covenant (or promise) that He will never again flood the Earth that way again. Check out Genesis 9 if you want to learn more about this story.
So I reminded my friend what the rainbow means and what it could mean for her now.
When you look at this rainbow, be reminded of God’s promises to you. Fill your mind with Truth from the Word. The Truth becomes a shield from Satan’s lies. I pray that seeing this rainbow blocks those lies and reminds you of the Truth — of God’s many promises to you.
I whole-heartedly believe the Enemy tries to trick us with lies. The Bible talks about these lies as flaming arrows. The Bible also explains that the best shield from these arrows or lies is Truth — as in God’s living Word — the Bible.
Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. – Ephesians 6:16
If we fill our hearts and minds with scriptures from the Bible, we are more able to shield ourselves from the doubts and fears that can literally destroy us if we let them. Instead of being overcome by the flames of the arrows being constantly shot at us, we can remember God’s promises to us.
May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed. – Psalm 20:4
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
In all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. – Romans 8:28
And there are plenty of other promises from God to us in the Bible. Those are just my three favorites! He also promises to supply our needs (Phillipians 4:19), to give us His grace (2 Corinthians 12:9), to provide us an escape from temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13), and to give us victory over death (1 Corinthians 15:57). He also promises us full salvation and eternal life. (Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, John 10:27-28)
Now that’s a lot of promises! And when you remember all of those things and really hide them within your heart, those flaming arrows are extinguished.
So whenever you are struggling with doubts or fears, whenever you feel like you are being fully attacked … look at the rainbow. Remember God’s promises.
What promises do you need to remember?
