For the sake of the world, burn like a fire in me. Light a flame in my soul for every eye to see. For the sake of the world, burn like a fire in me.
As I sang these lyrics during worship at my church, the words stirred in my heart and God began to speak. As the song ended, I sat down and began writing on my bulletin. Scribbling what I was hearing God whisper to my heart. I didn’t want to forget those words, and I knew it needed to be shared with you.
Burn like a fire in me.
Have you ever started a fire? There are three things needed: a spark or flame, oxygen, and some type of fuel. You can get a spark using matches, a lighter, or flint. Oxygen is pretty easy to get because you just use the air around you. Then, there’s fuel. You need flammable materials like dry brush and leaves.
I’ve watched many survivor type shows on TV where people have to start a fire. Lots of times they are able to get a spark, but it can be really difficult to get that small flame to grow into a full, blazing fire. It’s all about fueling the spark so it can grow.
For our God is a consuming fire. – Hebrews 12:29
God lights a spark inside our hearts all of the time. But unless we fuel that flame, it cannot grow into a fire. Without enough fuel, the spark can easily be distinguished by the world around it.
Ways to Fuel Your Fire
- Read God’s Word.
- Fellowship with others.
- Listen and take notes during your church sermon.
- Spend time worshiping — at church, in your car, or around the house.
- Join a Bible study.
- Spend time in prayer.
- Pray with others.
- Serve others.
- Read an inspirational Christian book.
- Listen for God’s whispers.
Only with fuel can a flame grow to burn bright — bright enough to light the way for others.
Are you fueling what’s inside your heart? Are you fanning the flame or letting it dwindle away?
