“I think I might be getting sick,” my husband said to me, just two days before Valentine’s Day.
It would be our first Valentine’s Day together — physically together on a date. The first Valentine’s Day when we were “talking” and interested in each other was on a Monday and I had a night class. We couldn’t go out. The second one, we were broke up. 🙁 And last year, he was living in Georgia while I was living in Indiana. So when I heard him say he might be getting sick, I was not about to let that happen. We were going on this date!
The next morning, I went into prevent-sickness mode!
Sometimes sickness hits us like a big mac truck — we don’t see it coming. And other times, we can feel our throats feeling a little scratchy. When we know it’s coming, there are things we can do to try and prevent it. These are some great things you can do anytime to prevent illness in your home.
Ways to Prevent Sickness
1. Wash the Bedding. Your sheets and pillowcases can be full of germs. Wash all the bedding. Plus, it makes it clean and soft and smell good, which means you can sleep well. And rest is important in preventing illness.
2. Wash the Pillows. Along with your bedding, you can also wash the pillows themselves. Pillows can be full of icky stuff! Toni at A Bowl Full of Lemons explains the best way to wash bed pillows here.
3. Switch Out the Cups. If you are anything like me, you will drink from the same cup for a few days in a row. My husband and I both keep a glass of water on our nightstands. So my morning of prevent-sickness mode included picking up all the cups sitting around our house, including the ones on our nightstand. I washed them and switched them out with new, clean ones from the cabinet.
4. Disinfect Everything. I used Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to wipe down everything that gets touched a lot including door knobs, light switches, refrigerator handles, the knobs on your washer, dryer, oven and sinks, remote controls, computer keyboard and mouse, and even the knob you use to flush the toilet.
5. Switch Out Hand Towels. Throw all the hand towels you use when drying your hands into the hamper. They need a washing! Switch them with clean ones. You don’t want to wipe your clean hands on a dirty towel. That defeats the purpose of washing your hands! Make sure all the sinks in your house have soap too.
6. Load Up on Kleenexes. I like to keep a box of Kleenex in both bedrooms and in the living room. In the living room, I even have some hand sanitizer next to the box. Everything for your nose-blowing needs!
7. Use Thieves. If you don’t have Thieves Young Living essential oil in your home yet, you better get on that! Rub thieves on your neck and feet before going to bed. We find this oil helps prevent infection and protects us from colds and the flu. We love the smell of it too. We like the kind that comes in a spray bottle so if our throats get itchy, we can spray it inside to kill all the germs.
8. Drink Plenty of Water. Everybody knows how important drinking water can be for preventing illnesses. Make sure you and your family are downing water all day long. You can even get the ZeroWater filter to make sure your water is just as healthy as you want your body to be.
