Even though it has been awhile, I do remember my single days — trying to find contentment and confidence in myself (something I’m still working on) while I waited for Mr. Right to come along.
There were times where I was completely happy with my singleness, and times where I loathed it. One thing that really helped me during those difficult times of singleness was reading a good book, specifically one that understood where I was and encouraged me in those times of waiting.
Perhaps you are single. Or maybe you are looking for a gift for a friend who’s single. Either way, these are my recommendations for great books for Christian, single women — whether that woman be you, your daughter, your friend, or your sister.
Great Books for Single Christian Women
Lady in Waiting: Becoming God’s Best While Waiting for Mr. Right by Jackie Kendall and Debby Jones
This is my number one recommendation. This book helped me so much during my single days. I’ve read through it twice at different times in life — once in college and once after graduating college. I even got the journal edition that includes questions and places to write inside the book. What I love about this book is that it doesn’t focus on finding the right man, it focuses on becoming the best woman. Each chapter focuses on a new character trait, and together it teaches us that only Jesus can make us whole — not a boyfriend or husband.
Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by John and Stasi Eldredge
I read this book in college, and I plan to read it again soon. Captivating explains that our hearts matter more than anything else in all creation. The desires we had as little girls and the longings we still feel as women tell us of the life God created for us. This book shows us how God is the hero of our stories — the one who will rescue us and show us how captivating and beautiful we are.
Authentic Beauty: The Shaping of a Set-Apart Young Woman by Leslie Ludy
Every girl longs for romance. This book reveals how we can have the passion and intimacy that we all long for. This books talks about our true Prince, what authentic beauty is all about, and how to fulfill the deepest longings in our hearts.
So Long, Insecurity: You’ve Been a Bad Friend to Us by Beth Moore
Insecurity is something I’ve always dealt with. I still struggle with it, but I definitely struggled with it most when I was single. I read this book, and loved it. In fact, I want to read it again. This book is about dealing with our inner-most fears and developing a strong sense of self — finding our value and self-worth as daughters of God.
Let’s All Be Brave: Living Life with Everything You Have By Annie F. Downs
Has fear ever held you back? As a single young woman, Annie writes this book like she’s sitting next to you in a coffee shop — with stories full of honesty and humor. This book isn’t necessarily about being single; in fact, I read it while married and really enjoyed it. But I do think single women would enjoy this book, especially when Annie talks about her own singleness in certain chapters. This book is great for anyone who likes to laugh and is ready to start living their life to the fullest.
Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan
No, this book isn’t geared toward single women. But it is about the deep, personal love that we all desire. Yes, God calls us to a passionate love relationship with Himself, and this book is all about falling in love with Him. When you really encounter God’s crazy love for you and you fall wildly in love with Him, it will totally change your life. I really enjoyed this book, and I would read it again!
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
This is the only fiction book on my list. This is my all-time favorite book, and I love it because it taught me what real love looks like. It taught me how God loves me. It taught me about the type of man I wanted to marry someday. It’s a beautiful love story and definitely worth reading. I’ve read this book twice, and I will probably read it again in a few years.
Dateable: Are You? Are They? by Justin Lookadoo and Hayley DiMarco
This is a great book for teens who are starting to date or think about dating. I read this as a teenager and it had a huge impact on how I chose boyfriends and how I viewed dating. This book is all about guarding your heart, having fun while dating, and keeping yourself from making mistakes in relationships you may regret in the future. Plus, I loved all the little doodles and funny parts throughout the book.

I’m a single woman and can see how God has used these years to make me grow in the ability to love. Nothing is ever wasted. The most important thing is to trust in God’s infinite love and His plan, and then wherever we are in life becomes fulfilling.

I love this list… I am always after new books to read. I am currently ‘Becoming Myself’ by Stasi Eldridge. I have a couple on my list that also aren’t single specific, but I think will be great for my personal singleness season (Beauty of Broken by Elisa Morgan, Beautiful Battle by Mary Demuth, Disciplines of a Godly Woman by Barbara Hughes)
Katie recently posted…Celebrating the Quiet Victories

Thanks for sharing some suggestions. I think I’d love anything by Stasi Eldridge. I’m getting ready to read Wild at Heart to hopefully understand my husband better. And I know I need to read Captivating again.

One of the best books I’ve read on singleness and focusing on relationship with Jesus is “Get Lost” by Dannah Gresh – based on the quote “A girl should be so lost in God that a guy has to seek Him in order to find her”, it offers some very deep thoughts on our craving for guys pointing to our deeper craving for God and includes 10 Bible studies/devotionals like “Get lost in His love”, “Get lost in His promises” etc. It’s awesome and really focuses you on what matters most! 🙂

I am a long time single in my mid-40’s who has served God overseas and know that God brings good things in His time not mine.
I suggest reading The Sacred Search, Sacred Influence, and Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. They are very good at removing the “happily ever after” veil that Hollywood and Fairy tales engender.

Thank you so much for the suggestions LaVerne! I loved the book Sacred Marriage too!
