You all have seen the adult coloring books taking the country by storm! Coloring isn’t the only thing becoming more popular. Bible art journaling seems to be all the rage with Christians lately. When I first saw it, I thought it was beautiful and immediately wanted a journaling Bible. Now, the creative way to interact with scripture is becoming more and more popular, and there are so many great tools for helping you do your own art journaling.
Research shows that coloring and creating stimulates the brain, senses, and creativity. Focusing on select scripture passages can help you recall portions of text that are important or meaningful to you. Aren’t we all supposed to be memorizing scripture?
I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you. – Psalm 119:11
I’ve recently discovered a new journaling Bible called the Beautiful Word Bible. This new Bible has single-column text, blank space inside, and wide margins so there is plenty of room for taking sermon notes, journaling your own thoughts, or creating beautiful artwork. But most journaling Bibles have that … what sets this one apart is it already has 500 illustrated verses inside to inspire your creativity.
The NIV version just came out, and the KJV and NKJV versions are coming out this month. Here’s a video about the Bible.
Shanna Noel, owner of Illustrated Faith, was the lead artist for this Bible. Illustrated Faith, you’ve heard of them right? It’s a creative resources company that serves artists and basically anyone who wants to experience a new form of worship in Bible journaling. They just partnered with DaySpring, so all their art supplies like pens, paints, stickers, and washi tape are all available here.
Shanna has some great tips to share for Bible art journaling.
7 Tips for Bible Art Journaling
- Spend time with God — read a devotional, listen to worship music, etc.
- Pray about it — ask God to guide you in your journaling time.
- Write it down — what is God telling you?
- Draw it — bring that big idea into the margins of your Bible
- Date it — Date your entries as you will want to go back and reflect.
- Tab it — Use tables to see what themes you’ve covered.
- Forget the rules — Connect with God in a way that is most natural to you.
That last tip is my personal favorite. I am such a perfectionist that actually trying to draw or be creative within a Holy Bible feels really overwhelming to me. But this isn’t about what it looks like or whether it’s as pretty as someone’s else’s drawing. This is all about spending time with God, letting Him speak through you, and worshiping Him.
I chose to start with a verse from Job, as that’s a book I’m currently reading. In trying out Bible art journaling with the new Beautiful Word Bible, I recommend using colored pencils rather than pens — unless you buy specific pens for Bible journaling. The pens I used showed through on the back page, but the colored pencils worked great! While you look at my work, remember I’m no artist and this is my first time ever trying this!
