On airplanes, they always tell you in the event of an emergency to put your oxygen mask on first before helping others with theirs. That’s because we can’t take care of others without first taking care of ourselves. As a new mama, this is something I sometimes struggle with. Taking care of ourselves in order to take care of our families is something we all must learn.
This couldn’t be more true when it comes to breastfeeding. Our babies can’t get the nutrition they need if it isn’t first in our bodies. We need healthy food and lots of it! Do french fries count as healthy food? (wink wink) We need essential vitamins and nutrients, so we can pass them on through our breastmilk. But if we don’t have the adequate supply of nutrition, our baby will take what it needs from our bodies and we’ll be left lacking in these areas.
Are You Getting Enough Calcium?
Calcium is one of those things that we need a lot of — for us and our little ones. According to the National Institutes of Health, studies have shown that women can lose 3-5% of their bone mass during breastfeeding. Our babies get the adequate amount of calcium they need from our breastmilk, but we need to keep our calcium supply sufficient enough for our own bone health too. You don’t need to take in extra calcium while you are breastfeeding, but you need to take in enough calcium every day to meet your daily requirements. We need 1,000 mg of calcium per day. Did you know most prenatal vitamins only give you 20-30% of the calcium you need each day?
I always think I’m getting plenty of calcium because I eat ice cream — seriously — every day. But one serving of ice cream usually only has 100 mg of calcium in it. I’d have to eat 10 servings of ice cream to get enough calcium! Although that sounds yummy, my waistline would not appreciate it.
To help me get the right amount of calcium to take care of my body so I can properly take care of my baby, I started taking Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews. Available in milk chocolate or caramel flavors, two Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews have 100% of your daily recommended calcium. They also have Vitamin D and K, which help with calcium absorption.
Viactiv sent me some of their calcium chews to try. I got both the chocolate and caramel flavors. They smell so good! I really love the chocolate ones! I also like that they come individually wrapped, so I can throw a handful in the diaper bag to always have with me.
Viactiv has half the calories and half the sugar compared to the leading calcium gummy supplement, which makes it definitely better for you than 10 bowls of ice cream!
Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are available nationwide in your grocery store and drug store — basically all major retailers including CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and Walmart. Check out the full list of stores here.
Are you getting the adequate amount of calcium each day? Do you think you’d like caramel or milk chocolate better?
