April showers bring May flowers. Yes, I have seen a whole lot of rain this past month, so I’m very excited to welcome May and see all the gorgeous flowers blooming. Fresh flowers are one of my favorite things. In fact, this year one of my goals is to always have fresh flowers in my home. I have so many beautiful vases, and it’s time to put them to good use!
Flowers from florists can be expensive though, so of course we want them to live as long as possible. I decided to get some tips straight from a florist to find out how to make fresh flowers last longer. Alberta Fowler was a florist for three years, and today she’s sharing these awesome tips with you!
How to Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer
- Always cut the stems of your flowers at an angle and get them into water as soon as possible.
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of bleach to the water, which will keep bacteria from growing in the water.
- Take off any green foliage such as leaves at the bottom of your stems. You do not want any of the foliage to be under the water because it causes bacteria to grow, which would cause your flowers to die.
- Change out the water every couple of days.
- When changing out the water, re-cut the stems of the flowers. Cut about a half an inch off so the flowers can get a fresh drink of water.
- Instead of using scissors, which tend to smash the end of the stems making it hard for water to reach the blooms, use pruners to cut the stems of the flowers.
- Pinch off any wilted or dead blooms to keep the bouquet fresh.
I know I will definitely be using these tips for all my fresh flowers!
