We have now lived in Louisville for about six weeks or so. For whatever reason, this has been feeling like our hardest move yet. Maybe it’s because we are no longer in the military community or we have a toddler this time. We haven’t put a lot of our decorations or pictures up because we want to paint first, and I think that’s making it feel like it’s not home quite yet. I was feeling down and discouraged about this, plus lonely since I don’t really have any friends here yet.
Then we found a leak in our basement. A leak that must have been there since we moved in and we hadn’t noticed because it’s a room we never go in, at least not yet. The floor (with brand new carpet) was soaked and unfortunately, three of Travis’ promotion certificates ended up ruined — frames and all. As we were cleaning up that mess, just a few days later, our garage got broken into and two of Travis’ saws were stolen. We are thankful those two circumstances weren’t worse. Obviously our entire basement could have flooded, ruining all our stuff down there or everything from our garage could have been stolen. Or worse, they could have broken into the house.
Even though I was grateful things weren’t worse, I still wished they were better. It was starting to feel like one thing after another, and I was really feeling discouraged.
That’s when I was reading “Secrets of the Secret Place,” a book about igniting your personal time with God, and God revealed something to me. He had been leaving me love notes quite often around our house, but I hadn’t seen them.
God’s Love Note Sent Through Doves
The chapter I read started talking about turtle doves and how they are often seen in pairs because they mate for life. It occurred to me that I had been seeing these two particular birds around our house quite often. I thought, though, they were pigeons! After a quick google image search, I realized the birds I keep seeing are doves.
How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves. – Song of Solomon 1:15
In the book, the author talked about how doves do not have peripheral vision. They can only see what’s right in front of them. In the Song of Solomon in the Bible, it talks about your eyes being like doves. It doesn’t mean you have creepy bird eyes! It’s talking about how the doves can see only what’s right in front of them. They don’t get distracted because of their lack of peripheral vision. God is saying He loves that you see only Him, your focus is on Him and you don’t get distracted by other things.
As I was reading that, I realized every time I see those doves in our backyard or on our deck or even sitting at our front door, it’s God reminding me to fix my eyes on Him. He doesn’t want me to get distracted or discouraged by my circumstances. Instead, He wants me to have eyes like doves and to focus on Him.
I absolutely love when God sends me love notes like this, so I had to share this one. Because maybe you too need to fix your eyes on Him. Maybe it’s time we saw like doves and focus on the One who created us and will take care of us.
Did you know doves don’t have peripheral vision? Has God sent you a love note like this recently?

This couldn’t have come at a better time. Praise the Lord! He works in amazing ways. We will be PCSing to Germany in less than 2 months and closing on our house in less than 2 weeks. The sale of our house in Georgia has had an issue with the appraiser just yesterday and in my fleshly weakness I immediately burst into tears in worry. As soon as the tears fell, I felt God reminding me He is in control. I have placed this at Jesus’ feet and started the morning with my coffee and devotion and then your email came. What a precious post you wrote.
It is so so true and I too must stay focused on God always. I am now looking back for the loves notes He has left me that have gone unnoticed. I am sorry to hear about the struggles satan has thrown at you since you have moved in. Also, thank you for you and your husband’s service. I pray God’s blessing will cover the things satan has stolen from you and your family.

Christine, I am so glad that you found encouragement through my post! I was feeling down on myself at lunch today, and those two doves landed right on our deck — perfect view from the dining room window. They stayed all through lunch! I just love God’s love notes, and I hope you will continue to watch for them! Good luck with the move. He is taking care of you!

Love your truths! Last month we found a bird, which my mom informed me was a dove – just like yours in the picture – made a nest on our patio and the egg has since hatched and grown. It has been a beautiful reminder of God’s presence.
