I like to do that, and I've been doing it for the past few years. I remember that my word for 2013 was Love. And my word for 2014 was Explore. This year, I am doing something a little different. Instead of choosing one word to represent the coming year, I am choosing two. That's right. I'm totally breaking the rules and choosing two words for 2015. This year is going to be so full of so many things that two words are needed. Brave Continue Reading
How Hospitality Can be as Easy as Learning One Word
One of my hobbies used to be swing dancing. I joined a swing dance club in college and learned a lot of fun moves. After the lesson each week during club, we would all practice the moves by dancing together. I went every week and saw the same people. I got asked to dance by the same guys a lot. There was one guy in particular who I had danced with a few times before, but every week he wouldn't know my name. After swing dance club one night, I was telling my friend how much it bothered me that this kid couldn't remember my name after weeks of dancing with him. I specifically remember saying, Continue Reading
I Know These People
One of my favorite parts of Allume was meeting new people and hearing about their blogs. It felt good to connect with others who get blogging and love Jesus. You know how when you meet a new friend and you really like her, you want to introduce her to the friends you already have? Or when you read a great book and you say, "Mom, you have to read this book; it's so good!" and you let her borrow it? Or when you hear a hilarious speaker at a blogging conference and wish all your friends could be there too so you could laugh together? That's what I'm feeling. I met some really awesome people at Continue Reading
Hospitality: From the Heart, Not the Home
In a previous post, I told you guys how much I desire to be hospitable and how I am striving to love others through hospitality. And in another post, I told you about one of the ways I tried to be hospitable and it didn't go at all how I had planned or imagined. Well, after that ice cream social, I was discouraged and the strive for hospitality kind of stopped. Then, like I told you before I went to Allume. And guess what the theme for the weekend was -- Hospitality. And then, I started a study plan from She Reads Truth and guess what their topic was -- Hospitality. I felt like God was Continue Reading
What I Gained from Allume
I recently got back from my first blogging conference. Allume is ... well, I'll let them tell you because their words are much better than mine. Here is the Allume mission: The Allume conference exists to offer a gathering place for kindred spirits to connect, learn, grow, and be refreshed so they can persevere in being a people who bring hope to the world through the social media medium. We want to reflect His Light in all our spheres of influence. Our goal is to go beyond the surface into intentional blogging and real life living, all to the glory of God. Allume is a one-of-a-kind conference Continue Reading
Ways to Sleep Better + A Bedtime Prayer
When my husband was gone for a month of training, I spent a lot of time with family in other states. But the days I did spend at home alone, I had the hardest time sleeping. It wasn't just that I missed my husband laying next to me, it was also the fear of having no one to protect me. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever felt so much fear before -- which was silly because I was safe in my locked house. I honestly believe Satan was throwing his flaming arrows toward me (Ephesians 6:16) to prevent me from receiving God's peace and getting a good night's sleep. Fortunately, I had many ways to help me Continue Reading
9 Tips for Searching for a New Church Home
Church is important to me as a believer because it's a place I can go to learn more about God, worship God, fellowship with others, serve others, and reach out to the community. For the past year, Travis and I have been attending a very large church that we both enjoyed. But last week, I looked around as I sat waiting for the service to start and I realized after an entire year we still didn't know anyone. Part of that is our fault -- we could have tried harder to get involved and been more forward about meeting people. But at the same time, we tried joining a small group but couldn't find Continue Reading
Will We Know Each Other in Heaven?
I've had a ton of questions about death and Heaven lately. I go through phases where I start to really question and wonder about all these things my little human brain doesn't know or can't understand. One of my biggest questions is -- Will we know each other in Heaven? As in, will I recognize my family and friends who are there? Will We Know Each Other in Heaven? I have a feeling this is something everyone wants to know. And I suspect everyone hopes the answer is yes. I know that's what I'm hoping. We get so close to those in this world with us. Heaven doesn't sound so great if I don't Continue Reading
Thankful Thursday 0522
Here are the top five things I'm thankful for this Thursday. 1. That my Travis is home from the field. I know it's only been a week, but I missed that guy. He's my best friend and I'm so happy to get to tell him all the little things again. 2. For Skype. I was able to chat with my cousin Bree for a few hours while I was home alone. It was such a nice break from talking to myself all day! I don't know that I could live so far from my family without all the technology we have today. 3. That God wants to hear our questions and concerns. I feel like I have been questioning a lot lately, Continue Reading
Overcoming Fears & Living
There are two things I've always wanted to do, but at the age of 25 I still hadn't done them yet. I had even gotten the opportunity to do one of them a few months back, but because of fear I chickened out. I wanted to shoot a gun. Travis took me to a shooting range and I was excited to try it for the first time. But as soon as we got in the room, fear overtook me. I'm embarrassed to say so, but I didn't even touch the gun that day. I waited in the car. At the end of April, I went home to Indiana to spend a few weeks with my family while Travis was out in the field for training. During a Continue Reading
Ways to Pray as a Couple
One of the most intimate things you can do together as a couple is to pray to your Creator. One thing you can be sure of when you and your spouse come together in prayer is that God is present. For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them. - Matthew 18:20 Prayer is a time to be open, to tell God all the things that are on your heart -- good and bad. It is a time for thanks and a time for requests. Listening to your spouse pray is a great way to know what is on their heart, what is worrying them, and what they desire. As a Christian woman, there is nothing more attractive Continue Reading
A New Season: A Glimpse into my Heart Break
I've been sharing with you the things I wrote during the worst eight months of my life -- when the man who is now my husband and I had broken up. My heart was broken (as was his), we weren't talking, and the only things I could do to lessen the pain was to pray and to write. With Valentine's Day coming up, I know there are others out there who are hurting with the thoughts of hearts and love. For those people, I'm sharing these writings to hopefully spread some sunshine during such a dark time. This is the fourth installment of A Glimpse into my Heart Break. Be sure to read the other Continue Reading
