Let the home projects begin. Now that I'm back from Korea, I'm back to fixing up my old farm house. I finished the bathroom before I left, and today I'm sharing our dining room reveal. We really didn't have to do much. We ripped up the carpet to reveal the beautiful hardwood floors underneath. We changed the light fixture. And we added some blinds instead of curtains. I like my dining room, especially the windows that add so much light. Unfortunately, that same light made it a little hard to take photos. Let's start with some before photos. Be sure to notice the carpet, the curtains, and Continue Reading
How to Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer
April showers bring May flowers. Yes, I have seen a whole lot of rain this past month, so I'm very excited to welcome May and see all the gorgeous flowers blooming. Fresh flowers are one of my favorite things. In fact, this year one of my goals is to always have fresh flowers in my home. I have so many beautiful vases, and it's time to put them to good use! Flowers from florists can be expensive though, so of course we want them to live as long as possible. I decided to get some tips straight from a florist to find out how to make fresh flowers last longer. Alberta Fowler was a florist for Continue Reading
Mother’s Day Gift Ideas & Deals
Mother's Day is upon us. I don't know about you, but my mom is one of my very best friends. In fact, I'd say as far as best friends go, my husband is #1 and my mom is #2. It's pretty special that I get to call my own mother not just a friend but a best friend. I hope that you feel the same way about your own mother. This Mother's Day, let's spoil those diaper-changing, tear-wiping, hug-giving ladies we've grown up with. The advice-giving, meal-making mamas who have been there for us every step of the way -- yes, they deserve a thanks. So today, I'm first of all reminding you that Continue Reading
Bathroom Makeover: Goodbye Swans
One of the first rooms finished in my house was surprisingly the bathroom. I guess it got done first because I need the bathroom. I need a toilet and a shower -- that's important to me. Now that it's done, I'm so excited to share it with ya'll! Check out my bathroom makeover! Here's what the bathroom looked like before we did anything. There was a window above the bathtub. Complete with old lady curtains. There were two towel racks above the bathtub. Teal and brown tile. A big clashing flower border. An old small mirror with lights that don't work. A big long mirror above the Continue Reading
Deviled Eggs with Bacon
This year for Easter, I brought my first dish to our family get-together. No one had signed up for deviled eggs, and you can't not have eggs for Easter. So I decided to try my hand at making deviled eggs for the first time! I knew I didn't want just any deviled eggs. You see, my sister-in-law made the best deviled eggs I'd ever had at Thanksgiving last year. And well, I just had to give my family a chance to try them too! Deviled Eggs with Bacon. Deviled Eggs with Bacon and Green Onion. Now that's what I'm talking about! (This post contains affiliate links. View my disclosure Continue Reading
Dinner Party Menu Ideas
Last week, I had my first dinner party in my new house. Remember how I've talked about how hospitality is on my heart lately? Well, this was one way I could extend hospitality to some of my favorite people. I made tacos. I borrowed a card table from my grandparents and some extra chairs too. I baked a small pan of brownies. I made a pitcher of lemonade. And I welcomed them into my unfinished home, to sit at my table and commune with me. I think they enjoyed my hospitality. But I definitely know that I enjoyed hosting them. The few days leading up to that party had been rough. I had felt Continue Reading
How to Improve Your Blog
My blog is my baby. I started it in 2012 and slowly became more and more serious about it. My dream is that this blog will become my job. What I mean is that right now my blog is a serious hobby, but I would like my traffic to increase enough that I can make some income. I'd like this blog to become my full-time job. I had no idea, though, how much work it takes to get to that point. But I am on my way. (This post contains affiliate links. View my disclosure policy here.) Two things have put me on a path to making my dream a reality. The first was having a professional designer give my Continue Reading
Closet Makeover
The kitchen is one area of my house that I just have not decided what exactly I want to do. I can't decide on a color scheme. But there was one part of my kitchen that was a no-brainer. I needed a closet makeover. When walking in the door to my house, you enter the kitchen. Directly to the left sits an old coat closet that was literally falling apart. It was scary to look at, and I can guarantee no one wanted to hang their coat there. This post contains affiliate links. Thanks helping me keep the lights on. :) Here is what my closet looked like before. First, my dad removed the parts Continue Reading
Buckeyes
I had never had buckeyes until I started dating Travis, and that goof ball loves them despite the fact that he hates chocolate. It makes no sense people, but I love the man. So when he left for South Korea, I made him a batch to take with him. Unfortunately, he got food poisoning before his flight and the last thing he wanted to do was stuff himself with peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate. This week, I decided to make another batch. This time I was going to take them to my new neighbors who I've never met. I wanted to introduce myself and let them know who was living next door now. I Continue Reading
How to Keep Bugs Out of Your Registers
I don't like bugs. Who does? Unless you are an 8-year-old boy or a biology teacher, I doubt you like bugs either. Especially bugs in your home! One of my biggest concerns with living alone was who was going to kill all the bugs! Living out in the country, I know that bugs are inevitable. But I wanted to keep them out as much as possible. I was afraid that they would crawl up through the registers of my house, so I came up with a solution. I bought a role of screen door mesh. I cut it into squares a few inches larger than my register vents. Then I lifted my register, using a vacuum cleaner Continue Reading
Best Deep Cleaning Products
Along with all the projects I've been working on for the new house, I've also had to do a lot of cleaning. The house we bought has been sitting empty for seven years -- so it really needed some deep cleaning when we got there. I needed to clean all the windows, the registers, the floors, the closets, the stair railings, the bathroom fixtures, and the list goes on. One of the things I spent a long time cleaning was the refrigerator. I was thankful the house came with a fridge, but when I saw how dirty and gross it was I was kind of hoping it wouldn't work and we could just buy a new one. Continue Reading
Tips for Installing a Ceiling Fan
We are slowly changing things in my "new" house. One of the biggest changes we made that really made a difference in how the house looked was pulling up the carpet and cleaning the original hardwood floors. Now, we've moved from the floor to the ceiling. We have been slowly installing new light fixtures in each room -- and it is making a big difference in what the house looks like! We aren't finished with all of them, but I wanted to show you some of the changes. (This post contains a few affiliate links. Check out my full disclosure policy here.) The very first light we changed was in the Continue Reading
